Guide: 4 signs it’s time to get your house washed

As a homeowner, you are likely worried about costly repairs like HVAC, plumbing, or roofing damage. As a result, keeping the exterior of your home clean may be on the bottom of your list.

However, getting your home’s exterior cleaned can restore its original appearance while also removing harmful organics that can leave lasting and costly damage.

We’ve put together this free guide to help you identify the top signs its time to get your house washed.

What are the signs you should consider getting your home cleaned?

These signs are based on our experience cleaning homes in the Greater Houston area.

1. The siding of your house has green, brown, or black marks

Many homeowners spot the green yuck growing on the side of their home, particularly if they have vinyl, wood, or HardiePlank siding, and know it’s time to get things cleaned. Chances are, your homeowners association may have sent you a notice in the mail if they’ve spotted the green yuck, too.

If you see the green yuck on your siding, it’s time to get your house washed. The good news is that using a gentle soft wash technique can safely kill the green yuck and renew the appearance of your siding without having to worry about damaging it from high pressure cleaning.

2. You have moss and algae growing on the lower part of your house

This is typically the result of poor water drainage off your roof, whether a failed gutter or not having a gutter in that particular spot. The water splashes up from the ground and along with poor sunlight exposure, creates the perfect opportunity for organics to grow

You may find that growth in these areas are particularly fuzzy and can spread up the side of your home – sometimes even as high as three feet! They may also cover bricks and your window seals, leaving green film on the windows.

3. You have black or dark spots on your soffits or fascia boards

Fascia boards and soffits, which are actually part of your roof and keep your home properly ventilated, are ripe for growing algae, especially in poorly lit sections of your home. Algae on these portions of the house can damage the paint and ultimately lead to rotten soffits and fascia boards. Rotten soffits and fascia boards are often the entry points for pests to get into your home and roof.

If you do not know where your soffits are, just look for the areas of your home where the roof extends beyond the walls. The area that connects the walls to the roof overhang is known as your soffit.

4. Originally bright spots on your home look dark or dirty, but cannot be cleaned with a garden hose

Most homeowners we speak with think the paint on their home has just faded over time and that their home needs to be repainted. Repainting a home is costly — often between $3k to $7k. The dark spots are often algae that’s grown on your surface paint, causing the paint to look dark and faded.

If any of these signs are present on your home, it may be time to get your house washed.
